When I first got into music production I was haunted by the old saying that "you can't master your own music". For some reason there is a popular view of music production in which you cannot master music you have mixed. Instead you have to send it off to someone else to put the final touches on it otherwise it will sound like absolute garbage. And for a long time I believed the lie that I couldn't master music I had mixed, and I just let mastering fall by the wayside. I didn't have all of the fancy vintage gear all the big mastering engineers had. I didn't have a summing console, and I didn't have the iZotope plugins to help me get pro masters. It just all seemed so foreign and mystical. LUFS and summing, and widening and tape machines. It was too much.
